Data Management, an Essential Element for Cognitive Computing

By CIOReview | Wednesday, June 6, 2018

Cognitive computing is the recreation or imitation of human thought processes in a computerized representation. The cognitive computing indulges in self-learning systems that use data mining, pattern recognition, and natural language processing to imitate the way the human brain works. Cognitive computing aims to provide capabilities to help in solving problems without the intervention of humans.

Data centers off late have been increasingly impacted by cognitive computing technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Not only data centers but also the database operations across industries are impacted by cognitive computing. A survey of 1,000 executives published by Infosys revealed that AI and related cognitive technologies are no more mere experiments conducted by computer or data scientists but they are part of a real-world that has moved ahead with technology, showing substantial results in business. Of the 1,000 executives surveyed, 86 percent feel that their AI deployments are either halfway or have almost reached the final stage, and consider it a key technology for future business initiatives. Almost three-fourth executives also affirmed that AI has imbibed into their organizations and acts as a transformation drive for a better tomorrow.

According to Jai Ganesh, the vice president and head of Mphasis NEXT Labs, AI and ML have not yet been accepted with the same intensity across different industries. However, the early adopters are striving hard to connect and engage with end customers, by accessing products and services like mobiles, TVs, sensors, and call centers. “Adoption is also seen in the supply chain for enhanced insights and experiences with regard to goods, products, and machines across the lifecycle usage,” added Ganesh.

Innovation has played a crucial role in triggering a fierce competition among companies in the market, who are following the rat race pattern to surpass one another. They are using AI-driven insights to enrich user experience.
